Tower Hamlets has loads of takeaways, research reveals

397 out of 1,728 food outlets in Tower Hamlets are takeaways.

The Centre for Diet and Activity Research (CEDAR) based at Cambridge University has revealed that Tower Hamlets has 1.56 takeaways per 1,000 people.

Out of the 1,728 food outlets in Tower Hamlets, 397 are takeaways. Three years ago there were 371 takeaways meaning an increase of 7pc.

Dr Thomas Burgoine, CEDAR research associate, said: “This is concerning, as research increasingly shows that neighbourhood access to takeaway food outlets is linked to what we eat, what we weigh, and our health.”

A council spokeswoman said: “We are concerned at the dominance of takeaways in the borough and their impact on health, particularly for younger residents.

“As well as tackling the number of fast food outlets – this includes taking into account how many schools are nearby when planning consent is being sought for a new business – we also want to improve the quality of foods being served in them.”
