Due Covid-19 lockdown restrictions, the council introduced temporary measures to assist residents, visitors, businesses and key workers to be able to park, but most importantly to enable key workers to provide essential services at this challenging time.

This meant that parking restrictions were relaxed, with car owners able to park without a permit in the area they live or work.

From 1 June if you use a vehicle in the borough, you will need a permit to park during controlled parking times or you may receive a Penalty Charge Notice (PCN).

As people try to avoid public transport, demand for parking will increase and the reintroduction of parking enforcement is necessary the council says.

The council has issued more than 4,000 permits to key workers so far but these temporary paper permits will no longer be valid.

Tower Hamlets Council will continue to support frontline NHS staff and other key workers by enabling them to drive to work, and park for free, in car parks and on-street parking bays.

Temporary paper key worker permits are being replaced with new, paperless virtual permits.

The council have emailed all those who were previously issued with paper permits to inform of the change and have to asked them for the information to issue a paperless permit.

  2. Tower Hamlets recently implemented a new online parking system. After waiting a week to approval, I cannot buy any day permits because their system is broken. I called the parking hotline and they told me to write an email (7 day turnaround). What if I need to park my vehicle before then? I used to be able to but no more. Well done TH!
