Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Tower Hamlets resident and local hero, 101-year-old Dabirul Islam Choudhury OBE has received his first dose of the Covid-19 vaccine and urged others to take it as well.

Inspired by Captain Sir Tom Moore, Mr Choudhury raised over £400,000 for charity by walking 970 laps of his communal garden – this was while he fasting during Ramadan in April and May last year. Sir Tom sadly passed away this week due to coronavirus.

Mr Choudhury said: “Captain Tom Moore has inspired millions in the UK and globally, including me, to step up our efforts during the most difficult times.

“He is our real hero and we will miss him terribly.”

Sir Tom died in Bedford Hospital on Tuesday at the age of 100 after testing positive for Covid-19.

Dabirul Islam Choudhury, inspired us all with his fundraising efforts has been made an OBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours.
