Following the Weavers by-election on Thursday 12 August, Kabir Ahmed of Aspire has been elected to serve as a councillor on Tower Hamlets Council for the Weavers Ward.
The by-election was called after the sad passing of Cllr John Pierce in June.
When the votes were counted, Cllr Ahmed had won a big victory. Ahmed polled 1,204 votes (46.5 per cent) and Labour was a long way behind (742 votes, 28.6 per cent). Turnout was 27.9 per cent, significantly lower than in 2018 (40.7 per cent)
Three polling places were opened from 7am to 10pm and there was a police presence at each polling station to safeguard the integrity of the election.
Following the close of poll at 10pm, the secured ballot boxes were taken to Tower Hamlets Town Hall at Mulberry Place for the count and declaration of the result. 905 postal votes were received for the by-election.
Cllr Ahmed said: “I would like to thank the people of Weavers ward for electing me and I promise to work tirelessly for them on the issues that matter most to them.”
He also thanked his family and called out Mayor Biggs to listen to residents and his failed LTN policies.
