The Japanese Canteen on Middlesex Street, Spitalfields has been fined almost £7,000 following an incident when a customer drank kitchen descaler in the Jasmine tea that they ordered. After drinking the tea, the customer felt a burning sensation in their throat. Thankfully it doesn’t seem to have caused any recurring health issues.
Representatives of The Japanese Canteen on Middlesex Street, Spitalfields, pleaded guilty at a hearing at Thames Magistrates’ Court on 11 February 2016. The company met with representatives from our Environmental Health and Trading Standards Service, who led the investigation, in June 2015 and admitted that the incident had taken place.
The company was fined £4,000, ordered to pay costs of £2,750 and a victim surcharge of £120.
Cllr Ayas Miah, cabinet member for Environment, said: “The council take breaches of food safety very seriously, especially when they are extreme cases such as this. We remind all food retailers of the importance of hygiene, and will take enforcement action when retailers are in breach of the law.
“Our Food Safety team inspects businesses on a regular basis to ensure that everyone who lives, visits or works in the borough can be confident of consuming any food products they purchase.”

Council food safety officers ensure restaurants across the borough are rated from 0 to 5 for hygiene with the results published on the Food Standards Agency website.
