Statue of Bangladesh founder unveiled on Sidney Street

A statue was unveiled on Sidney Street yesterday of the founder of Bangladesh, ‘Banglabandu’ Sheik Mujibur Rahman to coincide with Bangladesh Victory Day which is celebrated on December 16.

The day commemorates the victory of the Allied forces High Command over the Pakistani forces in the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971.

The statue was commissioned by British Bangladeshi political group called UK Awami League. The chief guest was Suranjit Gupta Sen, a Bangladeshi member of parliament who ‘opened’ the statue.

British Bangladeshi politics is marred by violence as opposing factions often end up in scuffles and punch ups when meeting in large gatherings.

The younger generation of British Bangladeshi’s are split on Bangladeshi politics and often comment ‘why do (they) bring village politics to Tower Hamlets’. Bangladesh is known for human rights abuses.
