25 firefighters and four fire engines dealt with a flat fire on Swanfield Street in Shoreditch.
Before the Fire Brigade arrived, a man left the ground floor flat, half of which was damaged by the blaze, uninjured. Around 25 people self evacuated the block.
The Fire Brigade were called at around 9pm yesterday and the fire was under control by just after 10pm.
Fire crews from Shoreditch, Bethnal Green, Shadwell and Whitechapel fire stations were at the scene. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Shoreditch is home to one of the first council estates, the area has been hugely gentrified. Privately-owned flats within the estate are very in-demand, but Tower Hamlets Council still control around 500 flats, which is around two-thirds of the whole stock.
