Detectives are appealing for witnesses and
information after a young man was left with critical injuries
after being struck by a car which failed to stop in
Whitechapel.

Police were called by the London Ambulance Service (LAS) at
00:18hrs on Friday, 26 May to reports of a car in collision
with a moped on Cavell Street, E1.

Officers and the LAS attended and found a 19-year-old man
with a head injury. He was taken to an east London hospital
where he remains in a life-threatening condition.

Detectives from Tower Hamlets CID are investigating.

The driver of the car did not stop at the scene and enquiries
are underway to locate the driver and the vehicle.

Enquiries so far have established that the victim was riding
east along Stepney Way when a dark-coloured car, believed to
be a Volkswagen Passat came up at speed behind him before
striking the victim, throwing him off his moped. The driver
of the car made off heading east down Stepney Way.

Detective Sergeant Mike Stubbins, from Tower Hamlets
CID, said:
“A young man has been left in a critical
condition and it is of paramount importance that anyone who
witnessed the incident or has any information comes forward.
We would urge anyone who may have seen this vehicle or
witnessed the collision to get in contact immediately.”

Anyone with any information is asked to contact Tower Hamlets
CID on 020 7275 4550 or tweet @MetCC
