After two serious assaults in the E14 area which were linked, the police have authorised Section 60 search powers to reduce further violence. The Section 60 will cover the whole of the E3 and E14 postcodes.

Section 60 gives police the right to search people in a defined area during a specific time period when they believe, with good reason, that:

  • Serious violence will take place and it is necessary to use this power to prevent such violence.
  • That a person is carrying a dangerous object or offensive weapon.
  • That an incident involving serious violence has taken place and a dangerous instrument or offensive weapon used in the incident is being carried in the locality.

The Section 60 expires on 3 January at 7am.
